It focuses on the provision of sound, personalised advice in the areas of preparation, risk- assessment, planning and personal responsibility. This fact-filled, accessible guide will see near-constant use in the primary healthcare setting. Contents: • Pre-travel health assessment • Geographical distribution of health hazards • Individuals with special considerations • Motion sickness and jet lag • Vaccines • Malaria • Other mosquito-transmitted diseases • Food- and water-borne illnesses • Other parasitic diseases • Diseases transmitted by ticks, lice, mites and fleas • Miscellaneous infectious diseases • Environmental and climatic factors • Returned travellers

Abstract

This book is an up-to-date practical guide to the treatment of both common and unusual bacterial, fungal, and protozoal skin infections. Antibiotics and other treatment options for common skin diseases such as acne, rosacea, erysipelas, and impetigo are extensively discussed, and a thorough update is provided on therapies for fungal infections in the nails, hair, and skin. Current treatments for skin symptoms associated with sexually transmitted diseases are also explored in detail. As the sulfonamides and tetracyclines have long held a special status in dermatology and venereology, an individual chapter focuses on these drugs and their potential side-effects. A range of mycobacterial infections are discussed, and a further chapter considers the treatment of protozoal infections, including leishmaniasis, which are often unfamiliar to practitioners in the Western world. This handy book, with its helpful graphics and clear lists of symptoms, treatments, and practical tips, will be an ideal quick reference for the busy practitioner.

Abstract

For the first time, the world’s experts in HIV-AIDS have come together to publish the Encyclopedia of AIDS. The work will feature over 280 A-Z entries including medical, cultural, social, and pharmacological essays. The Pathology entries cover the various types of HIV-related illnesses, including those that are and are not AIDS-defining. Many of the conditions that are AIDS-defining illnesses have their own entries or will be cross-referenced to a generic entry in which several related conditions are discussed (such as enteric diseases and fungal infections). Typically, the treatment of any given form of pathology is briefly discussed in the entry that covers that illness. The reference will be a must-read for Infectious Disease specialists, Immunologists, Public Health researchers, Virologists, Microbiologists, Pharmacologists, and Physicians.
